Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton
endorses the development of the
Thurgood Marshall Center
at a breakfast held for business and
community leaders.

The City needs community anchors like
the Thurgood Marshall Center to provide
inspiration and hope.

 

The National Park Service
presents a plaque designating
the
Thurgood Marshall Center
building as a National Historic
Landmark at a dedication
ceremony held in the historic gymnasium in 1995. This
building originally opened
in 1912 as the first full service
YMCA facility for African-
Americans, known as the 12th
Street YMCA Branch.

 

Friends and supporters gathered on
the building steps for the groundbreaking
ceremony in September 1998.

Lead donors were recognized including the
Fannie Mae Foundation, the Freddie Mac
Foundation, the Meyer Foundation,
First Union Bank, and the D.C. Department
of Housing and Community Development.

 

Civic and institutional
leaders joined friends and
donors in celebrating the
coming of the
Thurgood Marshall Center
at the groundbreaking
ceremony.
